Gracias! Gracias! Gracias! I think we all heard that message loud and clear from Fr. Martine from Santo Domingo this past weekend. Once again, I was so proud to belong to a community where so many opened their homes and dinner tables to welcome Fr. Martine. Parishioners took him to the West Side Market, JCU and Ursuline College, local restaurants, and the favorite part of the trip…sled riding at Thornton Park! Our Saturday night “fiesta” with many Spanish-speaking parishioners was absolutely wonderful, with numerous “countries” from Central and South America represented! We shared many cultural favorite dishes, and Jim Carr provided wonderful Latin music. As Fr. Marine said, “I will remember this trip as long as I live.” When I asked him what his most surprising experience here, he said “The great faith of the people.” I agree…thank you again.
Have you seen the small meeting room lately in the school? Thanks to the Guild of St. Dominic, we have new carpeting, paint and draperies. The transformation is amazing! The Guild also provided new countertops in the kitchenette and a new sink. We are grateful for their generosity in making these wonderful improvements!
A reminder that Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday, marking the beginning of the Lenten season. Masses will be celebrated at 6:30am, 8:30am and 6:30pm. Although not a holyday of obligation, Ash Wednesday is a sacred day in our life of faith and I hope you will consider joining us. Parents of children who do not attend Catholic schools are encouraged to make this a “late start” day for their kids and begin their school day at the parish mass at 8:30am. Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstaining from meat. Catholics also are asked to abstain from eating meat on all of the Fridays of Lent.
This Friday kicks off the famous Lenten Fish Fry at St. Dominic. Please see the bulletin insert regarding the menu and serving times. Consider asking a neighbor or family friend to join you and share the spirit of our parish community. Lent is also a wonderful time to invite someone back to Church…think about inviting someone to join you in “taking the next step” during this holy season.
