El Salvador Sustainable Economy Mission (ESSEM)
This group is dedicated to improving the economic situation for the people in Chiltiupan, El Salvador. Our goal was to raise $20,000 to benefit the initial project for this group through our 2010 Christmas collection. We raised almost $30,000! This will give people in Chiltiupan the resources needed for a sustainable agricultural program where they can grow food to be consumed by their family and also sold at market. This program will allow families to earn income and also improve their nutrition. We are partnering with a nonprofit organization in El Salvador who has successfully done similar projects in other areas benefitting hundreds of families. Thanks to the generosity of our St. Dominic parishioners we will be able to do even more to help the people of Chiltiupan through this program.
The El Salvador Sustainable Economy Mission (ESSEM) envisions the establishment of several projects where we will provide the expertise, oversight and financial support for the economic advancement of the people of Chiltiupan, El Salvador. Our first project named “Promotion of Economic and Community Development” involves the purchase of 6 acres of land to set up a hands-on agricultural school. People will be trained in sustainable, ecologically sensitive, agricultural practices for 10 weeks utilizing the purchased land. This project will also support a marketplace to teach participants how to sell their produce and artisanal products to a broader community. St. Dominic parishioners have been the main contributors to help launch ESSEM’s efforts and demonstrate their passion for truly living the mission of Christ.
For more information on how your donations are being utilized and how you can continue to live the mission with ESSEM, visit our new website at: www.essemonline.org

General Information about our connection to El Salvador
St. Dominic has an ongoing relationship with Santo Domingo Parish in Chiltiupan, El Salvador. Over the past several years, people from St. Dominic have visited our friends in El Salvador. It has been an extremely powerful and often life changing experience for many people from St. Dominic who have gone on the trips in the past. Participants in the trip learned more about another culture, encountered Christ in a new way in the community, met new people, and served to the best of their ability.
There are two different types of trips from St. Dominic. One trip is a relational trip. The focus of this trip is to experience a new culture, build relationships, grow in our faith, and see how we can serve. The second type of trip is a medical trip and it focuses on meeting the medical needs of the people in El Salvador. The medical trip is comprised of medical professional and translators and the relationship trip is open to everyone. You do NOT need to speak Spanish in order to participate in the trip, but we always need people with the ability to speak English and Spanish on both types of trips.
We also attempt to support the people in Chiltiupan by periodically collecting supplies that are needed such as vitamins, shoes, antibiotics, and school materials. Then, we bring the supplies with us when we visit on a trip. We also do fundraising for special projects and for educational opportunities for the children in Chiltiupan.
Hopefully, you can help to further the connection between us and the people in Chiltiupan.
